Are there more Skywalkers than we thought?
It’s been long believed that, when taken as a whole, the Star Wars saga is the tale of Anakin Skywalker. Obviously, that outlook becomes a little problematic when the movies stretch beyond that characters death… but The Force Awakens is determined to break that new ground and change our perspective on the franchise as a whole.
In a recent interview with the Costco Connection, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy explained the differences between the episodic films (such as the Prequel Trilogy, the Original Trilogy, The Force Awakens, Episodes VIII and IX) and the Anthology/A Star Wars Story films (Rogue One, the young Han Solo film):
“The Saga films focus on the Skywalker family saga. The stories follow a linear narrative that connects to the previous six films. The Force Awakens follows Return of the Jedi and continues that generational story. The Anthology films offer opportunities to explore fresh characters, new storylines and a variety of genres inside the Star Wars universe.”
If that’s true… how does The Force Awakens continue the generational story?
That’s the question. In order for this to be a generational story of the Skywalker family… there needs to be a new generation to pass the torch too. Poe Dameron has been confirmed not to be a member of the Skywalker family and we’re willing to bet Finn probably isn’t the son of Luke or Leia due to the fact it would be pretty disappointing to say they had a kid with someone we never met.
… so that leaves Rey. We’ve long suspected she had familial ties to the big three for a while now, and with a recent playing card tipping us off that she isĀ Force sensitive (while Finn is not), the evidence is mounting in favor of her being the next Skywalker.
If her name is Rey Skywalker, why is she on Jakku?
Well, it’s very possible she doesn’t know her last name. We’ve also seen her referred to as Kira… so her name might actually be Kira Skywalker and Rey could be a cover. If that’s the case, she’s on Jakku for her own safety. Whether she knows her possible family history or not is completely up for debate until we know more.
So… is she Luke’s kid or Han and Leia’s?
We’re willing to bet she’s Han and Leia’s, since they were the couple we’ve known and rooting for since The Empire Strikes Back. As we said before, it would be kinda lame if Luke or Leia was with someone off screen and we never saw. Plus, how bad ass would it be to have a Jedi who’s the daughter of Han Solo?
We mean… aside from Jaina. *ahem*
