Warning: Full Spoilers For Arrow TV show and DC comic universe

If you caught the latest episode of Arrow “This is Your Sword” you definitely might have noticed this shot.

What’s the significance?

This outfit is a reference to Tatsu’s alter-ego, Katana. Although the Katana character has been in existence since the 1980’s, this particular look debuted in 2011 as part of DC’s New 52 event.

Katana will be a part of the upcoming Suicide Squad movie but sadly will have no relation to the DC TV universe.

How does she differ from the comics?

Much like her television series counterpart, Katana has no special powers or abilities. Her strengths lie in her expertise in the martial arts and her samurai warrior training.

Her sword, on the other hand, is a great source of power and is very important to her character origin. In the comics she is married to Maseo Yamashiro just as depicted in the show. A key part missing from the show was the presence of Maseo’s brother, Takeo, who had been disowned by the family for joining the Yakuza. Takeo, who was in love with Tatsu as well, was able to obtain a mystical sword and decided it was time to exact his revenge on the Yamashiros. Maseo lost his life after being distracted in a duel against Takeo and in turn got his soul trapped inside the sword. Tatsu was able to disarm Takeo of this weapon and began to hear her husband’s voice from within it. The sword was later known as “Soultaker” and shown to posses the ability to take the soul of any being it cuts down and communicate with it. In her current storyline she has a reputation for being somewhat of a lunatic because of how she talks to her sword.

What’s next?

With Maseo dead by her own hand, they could shake up her character arc by adding the Soultaker sword. It seems a little far fetched and hard to determine pending how big a role Rila Fukushima will take next season but with a new flashback arc needed without returning to the island setting it is a slight possibility.

Katana has joined up with Black Canary several times over the year and most notably, recently as a member of the Birds of Prey. Black Canary is a core member of the Birds of Prey and if another heroine is added (possibly Thea as Speedy), we could look to that group coming together as soon as the next season of Arrow.

Barring a death of her character in the last few episodes Katana looks prime for a return next season.
