With Rogue One already entering production, more and more attention has been turning to the next Star Wars Anthology film. We’ve heard a ton of rumors concerning Boba Fett and Han Solo… but now we know a whole lot more.
Who’s directing the film?
Phil Lord and Chris Miller, the gentleman responsible for making The Lego Movie.
So, what’s the film actually about?
According to a press release from the official Star Wars site, the film will be an “early tale” about Han Solo. According to the official site, “the story focuses on how young Han Solo became the smuggler, thief, and scoundrel whom Luke Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi first encountered in the cantina at Mos Eisley.”
Do we know anything more?
We know that Lawrence Kasdan (writer of Return of the Jedi, The Empire Strikes Back, Raiders of the Lost Ark, and co-writer of The Force Awakens) will be writing the script with his son Jon Kasdan. Seeing as how Lawrence Kasdan is the man who really let Han come into his own in Empire and gave Ford some great dialogue in Raiders, he’s pretty much the perfect guy to be writing the film.
In a statement with the press release, they express their approval of Lucasfilm’s choice of directors, “They’re two of the smartest, funniest, and most original filmmakers around,a nd the ideal choice to tell the story of Han Solo, one of the coolest characters in the galaxy.”
Wait, where does Boba Fett play into this?
Well, it seems this is a Han centric film. However, it stands to reason that Boba Fett will be a major player in the narrative. We’ll probably see how their much fabled rivalry began and why the bounty hunter is so keen on bringing Solo in during the events of The Empire Strikes Back.
What about Chewbacca?
It seems like a certainty we’ll see Chewbacca in the film. Hopefully, they’ll stick to Expanded Universe and have Han as an Imperial pilot who saves Chewbacca from slavery. If not, we trust Kasdan to come up with something suitably awesome.
Will we see Jabba the Hutt?
That also seems very likely. We’re not sure if Jabba will hire Han to go on a certain spice run, but we wouldn’t be surprised to see that and the subsequent fallout of Han ditching his cargo when he’s boarded by an Imperial patrol.
Who is playing Han Solo?
Now, that’s an interesting question to be sure. Will they recast a younger actor or use CGI to age down Harrison Ford? Our money is on a recast, but that will be a big first for Star Wars… which has thus far maintained a fantastic continuity with its actors. Still, there’s a first time for everything…
